Ordering Different Widths? Beware Of Shading Differences
Posted on by James Higgins
When ordering the same carpet, vinyl or artificial grass in different roll widths, you may notice slight colour differences. For this reason, we always recommend ordering the same width for adjoining areas or continuous spaces. In separate, non-connecting rooms, these variations are typically unnoticeable, but they may become visible when rolls are joined together or used in open plan areas.
Why Colour Differences Occur
1. Separate Production Runs
Different widths are manufactured at different times using separate dye batches. Despite stringent quality control, slight shade variations can occur between production runs.
2. Material and Dye Absorption
Wider rolls may absorb dyes or coatings slightly differently during manufacturing, resulting in subtle tonal variations.
3. Natural Manufacturing Variations
Carpets and vinyl may show minor differences between dye lots, while artificial grass can vary slightly between pigment batches.
Will You Notice the Difference?
When installed in separate, non-adjacent rooms with different lighting, most customers won't detect minor colour variations. Differences typically only become apparent when rolls are joined together or used in visually connected spaces.
Our Recommendations
- Always order the same width for adjoining areas or continuous installations
- Request rolls from the same production batch where possible
- Use different widths only in separate, non-connecting spaces
- Compare samples in your actual lighting conditions before installation
This Is Common Across Rolled Goods
Similar variations occur in wallpaper and other manufactured rolled products. While we strive for consistency, slight differences between production runs are normal in the industry.
